Dig Dug for Atari 5200

Before the NES, the most expensive game console ever released was the Atari 5200, which came out in 1982, costing $330. It was widely regarded as a total failure due lack of support and its mediocre controller. Adjusted for inflation that Atari 5200 cost an incredible $683. Or, $83 more than the PS3, which is due out November 2006.

Samurai Showdown for Neo Geo

But what, you might be wondering, is the most expensive video game system ever made? The answer depends on how you want to look at the question. In an absolute dollar figure, it’s the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, released in 1993 by Panasonic, built according to spec by the 3DO company. Adjusted for inflation, the most expensive console is the Neo-Geo, released in 1990 by SNK, retailing for $650, which is about $990 in todays dollars. When you spent that much on a video game console, you got an arcade game platform to play all you want in your parents basement. For the same price as 1,300 games of Samurai Showdown, you could play as much as you want, well into your adulthood.
